— The African Sweat Hut —
|
We come together to experience oneness with the elements and with the Earth. The Sweat Hut represents the womb of the Earth Mother. |
Sweating as a physical and mental cleansing ceremony is an ancient practice found across every culture. Nixiwaka has been running Sweat Lodges since 1994. Many years of experience have shaped a ceremony that draws from Native American, Brazilian, African, Tibetan, and Indian teachings into something wholly its own. |
People exiting the lodge after a two hour ritual
Each ceremony is held in four rounds, each one honouring a different element.
|
I Earth Grounding, foundation, the body. We enter the womb of the Earth Mother and begin. |
II Air Breath, prayer, song. The steam rises and our voices open. |
III Fire Transformation, purification, release. What no longer serves is cleansed by the steam from the grandmother stones. |
IV Water Healing, flow, gratitude. We complete the circle and emerge renewed. |

The fire holds the space for the ceremony. Before anyone enters the lodge, the fire has already been burning for two hours. The stones are placed and heated with care — they carry the heat that will release the steam, and with it, the transformation inside the lodge. The Sweat Hut is revered as the symbolic womb of the Earth Mother. Inside, we are back in the womb, where we can experience the rebirth and release of those parts of ourselves that no longer serve our growth. By doing these ceremonies, we gently weave a web of connections between those present and all of our Relations (all sentient beings). |
“Participating in such a ritual is an intimate adventure into our spiritual reality.”
